Massive Tsunami hits Sendai, Japan

A Massive Tsunami hit the port city of Sendai in Japan on Friday, March 11. Large parts of the city were ravaged by 13-foot high tsunami waves that carried in debris consisting of cars, trucks, boats and even buildings. The massive speed of the tsunami waves gave very little time for residents to get to safer places.

Japan Earthquake - Magnitude 8.9 - Massive Tsunamis

Northern Japan was hit by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake on Friday, 11 March. The massive quake triggered tsunamis which reached the coastal areas within minutes. Massive bodies of water filled with debris (including boats and houses) swept ashore in a number of areas.

The Tsunami warnings were issued for other countries as well, including Russia. About 4 million homes in Tokyo and surrounding areas were affected by a power outage.

A series of quakes of large magnitude had already hit Japan over the course of this week. This latest quake had its epicenter 231 miles away from Japan's capital city, Tokyo. The Tsunami waves carried a lot of debris with them and resembled a lava flow. The debris included boats, trailers and houses, some of which were burning as they were swept along.

When earthquakes of this magnitude occur off the coast, they are known to generate tsunamis which pose a great threat to the coastline. According to the US GS, the largest recorded quake was of magnitude 9.5, which hit Chile on May 22, 1960.

Dorel Car Seat Recall

The Dorel Car Seat Recall involves close to 800,000 Units of Dorel's Safety 1st, Eddie Bauer, Disney, Cosco and other models. They have been recalled by the manufacturer due to a faulty harness adjustment strap. The manufacturing period spans from May 1, 2008 to April 30, 2009. A wide range of booster, convertible and infant seats are covered in this recall. Some of these units are sold as part of a stroller travel system, which were made by the Dorel Juvenile Group of Columbus, Ind.

After receiving several consumer complaints, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began an investigation last year on Dorel's restraining straps on the seats. Consumers complained that the restraining straps on the seats had loosened. Dorel however claimed that there has been no injuries or deaths reported due to this problem. It further said that there has not been any reports of the center front adjuster failing in real world crashes.
